The Soundscape
"The soundscape of the world is changing. Modern man is beginning to inhabit a world with an acoustic environment radically different from any he has hitherto known ..." He then traces the history of the western world from the perspective of its changing soundscape. By soundscape, he means our sonic environment.
Schafer's idea is to discern and classify sound to study and understand the nature of our sonic environment and the potential toxicity of noise pollution. His work is seminal in the field, not only because he introduced the idea of a 'soundwalk', which means listening intently to your changing environment as you walk, but also because he founded the field that has come to be known as Acoustic Ecology.
