Song of the Kauai'O'o

Thanks to the Macauley Library at Cornell University for the poignant song of the Kauai 'O'o, last seen in the 1980s, now extinct.

Listen to the world! Our goal at Ear to the Earth is to heighten environmental awareness through sound.

David Monacchi
Eco-Acoustic Compositions

"Listening is a creative process, and recording is, by its nature, an act of shaping the environment ... My intention is to offer the listener a new experience of nature ..." And Monacchi's experience ranges from simple fascination with the variety of shapes and sounds in water to indignation and anger at the destruction of habitat and extinction of species.

Here are some samples:

Stati d'Acqua (States of Water)

Echoes of a Sonic Habitat

Nightingale

Fading Away Whales

Fragments of Extinction

The Reserve, along with two research camps, Bai Dzanga and Bai Hokou, between one and two hours apart by Jeep, are managed by the World Wildlife Fund. I was able to work from both research camps ... Notes from New York

Joel Chadabe writes: "At this time in history, more than 50% of the world's population lives in cities. It follows that an understanding of cities, and of the nature and quality of life in cities, is an essential part of an understanding of the ecology of the world as a whole. Our idea is to understand cities by listening to them. Our immediate project is New York Soundscape, launched during the Ear to the Earth festival in 2008 as a panoramic portrayal of New York City's personality and urban ecology in sound ...
