The Ear to the Earth Festival 2012, to take place in New York City in October with performances, encounters, and multimedia displays, is a global survey of environmental sound art and multimedia.

Subtitled 100 x John in the spirit of the 100th anniversary year of his birth, it is also a salute to John Cage for his leadership in what Joel Chadabe called "the great opening up of music to all sounds". In 1937, in a talk titled The Future of Music: Credo, Cage said, "I believe that the use of noise to make music will continue and increase until we reach a music produced through the aid of electrical instruments which will make available for musical purposes any and all sounds that can be heard ..."

Wherever you live in the world, if you are a composer, sound artist, or multimedia artist, we invite you to join us in the creation of 100 compositions, sounds, and/or multimedia in which our natural or urban environment is an important aspect of the content.

We also invite you to organize a satellite event of any scope, whatever its form may be, wherever you are based in the world, so long as it deals with environmental sound or multimedia and happens within the time range of the festival. We will list your event in our festival website.

Meanwhile, in a certain sense, the festival has already begun. As they are submitted and approved, compositions and sounds are posted to this website. We invite you to download any or all of the sounds.
