Since 1968, Bernie Krause has traveled worldwide recording and archiving the sounds of creatures and environments large and small. Working at the research sites of Jane Goodall (Gombe, Tanzania), Biruté Galdikas (Camp Leakey, Borneo), and Dian Fossey (Karisoke, Rwanda), he identified the concept of biophony based on the relationships of individual creatures to the total biological soundscape within a given habitat. He has produced over 50 natural soundscapes. He creates interactive, environmental sound sculptures for museums and other public spaces throughout the world. His commissions can be heard at the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institute), California Academy of Science, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Chicago Science Museum, American Museum of Natural History, and other venues. He produced a five-day installation at the World Financial as part of the Ear to the Earth Festival 2006.
About this Image
This is one of four images that document the Arctic Soundscape Project, a field-recording trip in the late spring of 2006, initiated and led by Bernie Krause to document in sound the National Wildlife Refuge. Wild Sanctuary's team of recordists, including Dr. Kevin Colver and Martyn Stewart, in addition to Bernie Krause, each staked out a different site for 10 days. The sites were Beaufort Lagoon, Sunset Pass, and a site just south of the Brooks Range, some 35 air miles west of Arctic Village.
